When you need HSV to RGB

Pickers in design apps and game engines often show sliders for hue, saturation and brightness, because they match how people adjust color. The final output still has to be RGB: CSS, image files, shaders and screens work with red, green and blue. Convert from HSV to RGB when you copy a value from a picker into code, when you build a gradient by sweeping brightness from 0 to 100, or when you test a procedural palette. Enter hue in degrees, saturation and value in percent.

Typical uses

How to convert HSV to RGB

HSV (also called HSB) shares its hue calculation with HSL but defines the other two axes differently: Value is simply the largest channel, V = max, and Saturation is S = Δ / max (0 for black).

That is why a fully saturated pure color has V = 100% in HSV but L = 50% in HSL. The reverse conversion rebuilds the channels from chroma C = V × S.

Worked example

  1. C = V × S = 0.9 × 0.4 = 0.36
  2. X = C × (1 − |(H ÷ 60) mod 2 − 1|) = 0.36 × (1 − |(35 ÷ 60) mod 2 − 1|) = 0.21
  3. m = V − C = 0.9 − 0.36 = 0.54
  4. 0° ≤ H < 60°: (R′, G′, B′) = (C, X, 0) = (0.36, 0.21, 0)
  5. R = (R′ + m) × 255 = (0.36 + 0.54) × 255 = 230
  6. G = (G′ + m) × 255 = (0.21 + 0.54) × 255 = 191
  7. B = (B′ + m) × 255 = (0 + 0.54) × 255 = 138

hsv(35, 40%, 90%) = rgb(230, 191, 138)

Tip: For a smooth gradient, step only the hue or only the value in equal increments and hold the other two fixed. Convert a handful of stops here, then let CSS interpolate between them instead of listing every step.

Frequently asked questions

Why does value 100% not always give white?

Value sets the largest channel, not whiteness. hsv(0 100% 100%) is rgb(255 0 0), pure red. White needs value 100% with saturation 0%, and any value with saturation 0% produces a gray.

Which ranges do game engines and libraries expect?

Unity's Color.HSVToRGB and Python's colorsys.hsv_to_rgb take all three components from 0 to 1, with hue as a fraction of the full circle, so 180 degrees becomes 0.5. Divide degrees by 360 and percentages by 100 before the call.

What is the difference between HSV and HSL?

They share hue, but HSV's Value is the brightness of the strongest channel (a pure color has V = 100%), while HSL's Lightness places pure colors at 50%, halfway between black and white. Color pickers in design tools typically use HSV; CSS uses HSL.

Where is HSV used?

In the color pickers of graphics editors (Photoshop, GIMP, Figma) and in image processing and computer vision (e.g. OpenCV color thresholds), wherever separating chroma from brightness simplifies the task.

Is the conversion exact?

The formulas are mathematically exact, but displayed values are rounded to whole numbers, so converting back and forth can shift a channel by ±1. For pixel-perfect work keep the original value.
